May 2012
It’s condescending and belittling in nature at best, if you’re speaking to a grown person; insulting and sexist at worst.
If it’s coming from a girl my age or older: “hun” is something that you say to children, it’s condescending and insulting to call someone your equal age-wise at the very least something one calls a little child. Ugh just fuck that if you do that, I hate it.
If it’s coming from a guy that I know, and certainly one I do not know: it is, again, condescending and belittling, and also sexist. Because you’re babying a full grown, intelligent, strong autonomous person. Sexism, mysogony, patriarchy..They all seek to make quiet, cute, dainty, obeying creatures out of women. They seek to make them smaller, to make them inferior. The use of the term “hun” implies all of these things intrinsically, (again, think the baby or child relationship/image). It also (given, the context in which it is used and your relationship with said user,) can communicate ownership and/or dehumanization or objectification.
If it’s coming from a family member or someone who loves me, who may be the only possible exception to this rule because it’s supposed to be a term of endearment: I just plain don’t like it. If you use it I will be mad.
Im so excited

yes yes yes yes

- writing a philosophy paper: "We" can only "truly" "appreciate" the "great" works of "past" "philosophers" if we read "their" works our"selves".
